The bloody artist Herman Nich has died at the age of 83

The revered avant-garde artist, who tends to shock the public with the use of blood, carcasses and entrails in his performances, has died at the age of 83, The art newspaper reports.

Hermann Nitsch, one of the founders of Viennese actionism - a movement known for its violent ritual performances that often contradict moral taboos, died on April 18 at the age of 83. His death was confirmed to the Austrian press by his wife Rita Nitsch, who says that the artist died after a serious illness.

"Today the world has lost a pioneering artist who redefined performance and painting through his intuitive and existential works that will continue to live on and continue to inspire future generations of artists," says Mark Glimcher, president and CEO of Pace.
