The NFT gallery will open in the Vatican so that viewers around the world can see the works of art, manuscripts and other items stored in its collection, ArtNews reports.
The project is a collaboration between Sensorium, a VR company, and Humanity 2.0, a Vatican-led nonprofit organization that, according to its website, works for "human prosperity."
Humanity 2.0 is headed by Father Philip Larry, a representative of the Holy See.
"We look forward to working with Sensorium to explore ways to democratize art, making it more accessible to people around the world, regardless of their socio-economic and geographical limitations," Larry's father said in a statement.
It is expected that the gallery, which can be viewed in virtual reality and on desktop computers, will be available this year.
The Vatican is a repository of the best works of art and objects in the world. The Vatican Museum was founded in the 16th century and contains about 800 works of art, including works by Renaissance artists such as Michelangelo and Raphael, as well as more modern works such as Wassily Kandinsky and Vincent Van Gogh.
It is not yet clear which parts of the Vatican collection will be available for sale as an NFT. NFT .
