Artist Brian Donnelly, known as KAWS, opened the New Fiction exhibition simultaneously at the Serpentine Gallery in London and on two free online platforms — on the platform of the popular Fortnite game and in the augmented reality application Acute Art. The artist suggests that this will help him establish a connection with a lot of viewers in a "new and large-scale way." He believes that for many Fortnite players, his exhibition will be "the first touch to the art of painting and sculpture in a comfortable and understandable environment for them."
More than 400 million player accounts are registered on the Fortnite platform, while the attendance of the exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery is usually about 35 thousand people. For the first time, KAWS worked with Fortnite in April 2020, when he participated in the creation of a graphic image for a concert by rapper Travis Scott. The collaboration continued in 2021 with the creation of a virtual Skeleton Companion costume for Halloween players. The exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery presents many variants of the beloved KAWS Companion character. Some of them are virtual, they can only be seen using the Acute Art application for a smartphone. "This work is just like any other," Donnelly says of the works available through the app. "You can view it as a bronze sculpture, walk around it, evaluate its size."
