The Louvre Museum organized a crowdfunding company to raise € 1 million to purchase a unique cameo XVII, which was attended by 5.5 thousand people, Artinvestment reports.
The cameo itself is supposedly considered to be the work of Giovanni Ambrogio Miseroni, an outstanding hard stone sculptor of the Italian Renaissance.
At one time, the cameo served as a lid for a cup made by Ottavio Miseroni. It was first mentioned in the inventory of Cardinal Mazarin's collection, compiled after his death in 1661. Then both items were transferred to the royal collection, and during the Great French Revolution they were deposited in the Louvre.
At the end of the XVIII century, the French Directory distributed some of the works of art as payment of the debts of the crown. Since then, the bowl has been considered lost. It first appeared at the Paris auction in 1968, when it was acquired by the Louvre. The cameo was put up for sale in 2011, but then the Louvre was unable to raise funds for its purchase. This spring, both items will be reunited in the museum collection.
